Collection: Black Tea

Black Tea, also known as Red Tea in China, is often marketed as "Orange Pekoe", and is characterized by a bold, malty, coppery liquor.

Black tea is an oxidized tea, the national drink of England, and the tea used to brew many commercial iced teas.  It is popular throughout North America, and is produced in numerous countries including India, Sri-Lanka, China and Africa.  Black teas are used to make classic blends like English Breakfast, and Earl Grey. Black tea is often characterized by a bold, malty, coppery liquor.

All tea comes from the Camellia Sinensis plant, which has two main varietals: Camellia Sinensis Sinensis, and Camellia Sinensis Assamica.  Like wine, which is fermented from two main grapes, tea comes in thousands of different forms and qualities, based on growing region, growing altitude, and processing. Like fine wines, black tea comes in a wide variety of flavors and characteristics, from the bold, robust assamicas that are used in our Wake the Tiger Irish Breakfast blend, to the floral, malty Sri-Lankan Sylvakandy.  Tea is processed into five main varieties:  white, green, Oolong, Black, and Dark tea (Pu-Erh). Other varieties, such as Yellow and Purple tea can also be found.  Herbal "teas", which are made from a variety of herbs and flowers are not true teas, but are known as tisanes.
